We all know people that lag. We refer to them as laggers. They never show up on time anywhere. "I'm leaving now" really means, "I'll leave in ten minutes after I get ready." We even tell them we are meeting earlier so they will show up on time. I know that everyone has told someone to show up ten minutes earlier than he has to be there, knowing he will run late and then end up being on time. There are exceptions to running late. Sometimes traffic is impossible to get through, and sometimes emergencies come up, but for the most part, people that continually run late do so because of their own choices and lack of preparation. When people continually run late, it is as if they never have any intention to try and show up on time, that they will show up when they are good and ready. I'll admit that sometimes I am the one that lags, but I try not to, because I think it's rude and disrespectful to others.
Laggers hold up other people. It's not just about time that the laggers waste. I think it's quite rude to continually show up late when meeting with others. Showing up late shows a lack of respect for others and their time. It implies that the lagger thinks he is better than everyone else, that his time is somehow more important than everyone else's time. Everyone else can wait on him as far as the lagger is concerned.
I personally see not showing up on time as a lie. You make a promise when you tell others you will meet with them at a certain time. Regardless of whether you have an excuse, that promise is broken when you do not show up on time. When there is no excuse, it becomes your own responsibility to show up on time and therefore it becomes your intention to break the promise you made. If you tell me to show up somewhere, please try to show up on time or don't tell me you are going to show up on time.
Show some respect to others around you. Show up when you say you are going to show up.
